Air Conditioning Guide

Choosing the right air conditioner for your space

Cooling and heating capacity is measured in kilowatts (kW). Approximate room sizes for different systems:

  • 2.5 kW: 10–25 m² – Bedrooms, small lounges, studies, small kitchens, small offices
  • 3.5 kW: 25–35 m² – Bedrooms with ensuites, studies, small lounges, mid-sized kitchens, offices
  • 5–6 kW: 35–60 m² – Large bedrooms, mid-size lounges, large kitchens, mid-sized rooms with high ceilings, offices
  • 7–8 kW: 60–80 m² – Large lounges, large open-plan areas, small shops, offices

For more complex installations, a heat load calculation is recommended. This considers room size, windows, insulation, roof type, shading, and other factors. Incorrect sizing may lead to inadequate cooling/heating.

Need help choosing the right system? Visit our Buyer’s Guide or contact our experts for guidance.

Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) are mandatory Australian government energy efficiency standards. All systems sold by AC Hub comply with MEPS.

EER stands for Energy Efficiency Rating, which measures energy consumption and efficiency. Higher EER ratings indicate more efficient systems.

A reverse cycle system can both heat and cool your space.

Inverter systems use a variable frequency drive to control motor and compressor speed. They reach the desired temperature faster, maintain it efficiently, run quieter, and cost less to operate than fixed-speed units. Correct sizing is essential for optimal performance.

Ducted Air Conditioning

Typically, ducted systems last 10–12 years, depending on usage.

Ducted systems generally have higher capacities and slightly higher running costs, but they cool or heat an entire house, unlike split systems that cover single rooms.

Maintenance

How to care for your air conditioner for optimal performance

Filters should be cleaned every 2–3 weeks. In dusty environments, clean more frequently. Clean filters improve airflow and can reduce energy consumption by 5–15%.

Cleaning your filters is the most important maintenance task you can do to care for your air conditioner.

In more dusty or polluted environments, you should clean your filters more regularly. Like anything the more you maintain, the longer it will last.

At a minimum you need to clean and maintain your air conditioner’s air filters, as any build-up of dust or dirt will restrict airflow and reduce the energy efficiency and capacity of your system.

If installed correctly, re-gassing is never required.

However, if the pipe connections are not flared (a type of compression fitting) properly or tightened to the correct torque, or if the pipes themselves degrade over time for some unforeseen reason, then they may leak, which is the most common cause of needing to re-gas an air conditioner.

Terms such as ‘stale gas’ or ‘expired gas’ are not something that occurs in air conditioning units.

Gas leaks occur only due to improper installation or pipe damage and should be inspected by a qualified technician.

Yes. Filter replacement instructions are provided in your system’s operation manual.

Remove the fascia/front panel and vacuum or wash the filters using natural detergent and lukewarm water, then allow to air dry in the shade.

  • Have your system checked annually by a qualified service technician.
  • Keep the air filters clean.
  • Keep the outdoor unit free of leaves and debris.
